Over the last few months, my golf game has taken a big step forward. My handicap has dropped by two to three strokes this year—most of that improvement coming recently as I’ve made small swing tweaks, played more consistently, and finally gotten comfortable with the motion I’m trying to repeat.

But even as my scores dropped, I hit a plateau.

I’ve always been a naturally low-ball hitter—driver, irons, wedges, everything. Sometimes that’s been an advantage, but as my game has improved, the low launch started hurting more than helping. I struggled with:

  • Driver carry distance

  • Irons and wedges not stopping on greens

  • Distance inconsistency, even with what felt like flush strikes

The frustrating part? I knew I was hitting the ball well. The ball flight just wouldn’t cooperate.

So I decided to get some answers.

The Setup: My Irons & a Free TrackMan Session

Before we get into the interesting part, here’s what I’ve been playing for the last two years:

  • 2021 TaylorMade P790s

  • Dynamic Gold 95g S300 shafts (stiff)

  • Golf Pride CP2 Pro midsize grips

After a recent tournament (me and William grabbed second place), every player received a free 30-minute hitting session at PGA Tour Superstore. I figured I’d use mine to finally diagnose whether my issues were swing-related… or equipment-related.

I took about 45 minutes hitting every iron in my bag using TrackMan’s practice mode. The two clubs I focused on most were:

  • 7-iron

  • Pitching wedge

Why those two? Simple: they’re my best-struck irons, and they represent the “benchmarks” of my bag—one mid-iron, one scoring club. If anything was going to reveal the truth about my ball flight, it would be those.

TrackMan automatically synced every shot to my app, which set the stage for the experiment.

What Makes This “DIY Fitting” Different

Here’s where things get unique.

Instead of only relying on TrackMan data, I took all of the following and fed them directly into ChatGPT:

  • Every spec of my irons

  • Shaft weights and profiles

  • My preferred golf ball

  • My historical launch tendencies

  • My ideal TrackMan numbers from the session

  • And the problems I was facing (low launch, low spin, distance variability)

Then I asked ChatGPT to diagnose the problem using the data.

And what it told me shocked me—because it made complete sense.

The Diagnosis: It Wasn’t My Swing. It Was My Equipment.

According to the numbers—and confirmed by ChatGPT’s analysis—my issue was overwhelmingly an equipment mismatch, not a swing flaw.

Two things stood out:

1. I’m a naturally low-spin player.

My attack angles were good. My strike quality was good. But my spin rates were extremely low relative to normal benchmarks.

2. My equipment amplified my worst tendencies.

Every component I was using leaned toward low spin and low launch:

  • Low-spin shafts

  • Mid-launch, low-spin heads

  • A low-spin golf ball

  • A naturally low-launch swing

All of that combined to give me no chance of producing normal peak height or stopping power.

In other words:
The clubs were fighting my swing—not helping it.

That information alone was worth the entire experiment.

What I Did Next

I wasn’t ready to spend $1,200+ on a brand-new iron fitting. So I went hunting for a smarter route.

I found a set of irons on eBay—ones that matched exactly what my numbers suggested I needed. Best part? I could sell my current set for around the same price. Essentially a swap.

I haven’t hit the new irons yet (cold weather hasn’t helped), but I’m making it a priority—whether in a heated bay or on the course.

And once I’ve tested them, I’ll update this article with the results.

Why I’m Sharing This

Before you think I’m saying this replaces a real club fitting, let me be clear:

Nothing is better than a professional fitting.

But this method isn’t meant to replace one.

It’s meant for:

  • The golfer who isn’t ready to book a fitting

  • The player who suspects their equipment might be holding them back

  • Anyone plateauing who wants real data

  • Golfers who want to better understand why their ball does what it does

This TrackMan + ChatGPT combo gave me clarity I had been missing for months—and it didn’t cost me anything besides time.

If you’re stuck, frustrated, or just curious… it might help you too.

Try It Yourself & Tell Me What You Find

If you try this process, I genuinely want to hear about your experience.

Message us on Instagram or reply to our email newsletter with:

  • Your TrackMan numbers

  • Your club specs

  • What ChatGPT diagnosed

  • Whether it changed your game

I’ll update this post soon once I get real-world feedback from the new irons.

Until then, stay warm—winter golf season is here. And if you get out on the course, just know…I’m jealous.
